Low Speed High Torque Direct Drive Motor vs Geared Drive: Selection Guide for Conveyors and Mixers

Low speed high torque direct drive permanent magnet motor

Choosing a low speed high torque direct drive motor is a decision about whether a gearbox stays on site for the next fifteen years. Below 300rpm the reducer often costs more to own than the motor: oil changes, seal leaks and gear mesh losses. A gearless permanent magnet motor removes that stage and delivers rated torque from zero speed. ENNENG builds these motors from 5.5kW to 3MW for conveyors, mixers, pumps and wind turbines.

Technical Highlights: Low Speed High Torque Direct Drive Motor

The behaviour of a direct drive machine follows from three design facts.

Torque comes from pole count and rotor diameter. Many poles and a large air-gap diameter produce rated torque at 60rpm to 300rpm with no speed reduction. The rotor field comes from NdFeB magnets, so there is no rotor copper loss and efficiency stays flat across the load curve.

The gearbox disappears, and so does its maintenance. Direct drive removes gear stages, oil and couplings. What remains is a rotor on two bearings, so the drive is maintenance free between bearing intervals.

Heat becomes the design limit, not torque. At low speed a shaft-mounted fan moves little air, so ENNENG specifies IC416 forced ventilation or liquid cooling for continuous duty in confined spaces.

Core Advantages of a Gearless Permanent Magnet Motor

Low Speed High Torque Direct Drive Motor: Full Torque from Zero RPM

  • Rated torque at standstill, so a loaded belt conveyor starts without slip or fluid coupling
  • Usable from 60rpm to 3,000rpm with no reducer or chain
  • 20% to 40% higher torque density than a geared set in the same footprint

Water Cooled PMSM Motor: Rated Torque in Confined Spaces

  • Liquid cooling holds class F(H) insulation within rated temperature rise at low speed
  • IP54, IP55 or IP68 protection for dust and outdoor installation
  • 6kV and 10kV high voltage versions available for heavy duty and explosion proof duty

Inverter Compatibility and Speed Range

Every ENNENG direct drive permanent magnet motor is designed for inverter vector control rather than adapted to it. Constant torque is available from 5% to 100% of base speed, with encoder, PTC or PT100 feedback and full load testing. Voltages run from 220V to 690V, with 6kV and 10kV versions for large pumps, mills and explosion proof areas. Mounting is IMB3, IMB5 or IMB35, and the same frame family covers air compressor duty and low noise applications where gear whine is unacceptable.

Application Case Studies

1. Belt conveyor drive. A 75kW direct drive motor at 120rpm replaces a geared induction set on a bulk handling line, starting a loaded belt and removing two gear stages and the fluid coupling.

2. Industrial mixer. A 55kW gearless permanent magnet motor at 90rpm drives a high viscosity mixer, holding torque through viscosity peaks without the oil service that stopped the line twice a year.

3. Gearless wind turbine. A 100kW gearless permanent magnet motor at 120rpm mounts on the hub shaft, eliminating the gearbox and its oil schedule.

The ENNENG Customisation Advantage

No two low speed duties share the same speed, voltage, shaft or mounting constraints. ENNENG provides free electromagnetic design proposals, bespoke shafts and flanges, full OEM and ODM service, and cooling options selected against your ambient and duty cycle. The company has built permanent magnet machines since 2014 and exports 70% to 80% of output.

FAQ

Q: When is a low speed high torque direct drive motor cheaper than a geared drive?
A: Below 300rpm, once gearbox purchase, oil service and downtime are counted. The higher price is normally recovered within two to three years.

Q: Can a gearless permanent magnet motor replace an existing gearbox without changing the machine?
A: Usually yes. ENNENG matches shaft, flange and mounting to the existing interface, so the drive train is shortened rather than redesigned.

Q: How is heat handled at very low speed?
A: For continuous duty below 300rpm, ENNENG specifies IC416 forced ventilation or liquid cooling, keeping class F(H) insulation within rated temperature rise.
